How to unsubscribe from newsletters in bulk

Most full inboxes aren't full of people. They're full of newsletters you signed up for once, shops you bought from once, and apps that email you about everything. Here's how to clear them in bulk and keep them from coming back.

In Gmail: Manage subscriptions

Gmail has a page that lists everyone sending you subscription email.

1. Open Gmail on your computer.
2. In the left sidebar, click More, then Manage subscriptions.
3. Go through the list and click Unsubscribe next to each sender you're done with, then confirm.

It's still one sender at a time, but they're all on one page, which is much faster than hunting through your inbox. Allow senders a couple of days to process the request.

In Apple Mail

When an email comes from a mailing list, Apple Mail shows an Unsubscribe banner at the top of the message. Click it and Mail sends the unsubscribe request for you.

To find the worst offenders quickly, search your mailbox for unsubscribe. Almost every marketing email includes the word, so the results are a list of every sender to review.

For iCloud Mail on the web

At icloud.com/mail, open an email from the list and use the unsubscribe link in the email, or the unsubscribe option Mail shows at the top when the sender supports it.

Unsubscribe or just filter?

Not every newsletter deserves to go. Some you want, just not in your inbox.

• Unsubscribe from anything you haven't opened in a month.
• Filter the ones you like into a separate place, so you read them when you choose. In Gmail, open one, click the three dots, Filter messages like this, and choose to skip the inbox and apply a label.
• Keep only mail from people in your inbox.

Stop them coming back

• Use a separate address for shopping and sign-ups. iCloud+ has Hide My Email, which creates a new address for each site.
• Untick the "keep me updated" box when you buy things.
• Let your mail app sort them automatically.
